विजयनगर(हंपी) साम्राज्याच्या स्थापने पासून सुरू होते. ई.1335-36 मध्ये हरीहरराय आणि बुक्कराय या दोन महान सेनानींनी कर्नाटकचे चाणक्य अशी उपाधी लाभलेले महान संत, ऋषी आणि मुत्सद्दी राजकारणी पंतप्रधान(यानी नुसती विजयनगरची स्थापनाच केली नाहीतर ते या साम्राज्याचे 36 वर्षे पंतप्रधान या नात्याने त्यानी पालकत्व केले) स्वामी "विद्यारण्य" यांच्या प्रेरणेने विजयनगर साम्राज्याची स्थापना केली. हे विजयनगरचे सर्व राजे विठ्ठलभक्त होते. आणि वारकरी होते, वारीला येत होते. पंढरपूरचे स्थान महात्म्य विजयनगरला खुप पुर्वीपासून माहीत होते. पुढे तुळूवंशाचा सम्राट कृष्णदेवरायच्या काळात हे राज्य समृध्द आणि भरभराटीला आले. (याचा कार्यकाल 1509 ते 1529), सम्राटकृष्णदेवराय हा निस्सीम वीठ्ठलभक्त आणि वारकरी होता. याच्याच काळात (1484 - 1564) महान संत विठ्ठलभक्त वारकरी, कर्नाटक संगैताचे भिष्मपितामह, महान रचनाकार, दक्षिण भारतातील विठ्ठलदास परंपरेचे निर्माते "संत पुरंदरदास" होऊन गेले. महाराष्ट्रात जशी ज्ञानोबामाऊलीनी वारकरी संप्रदायाला जशी ऊर्जीतावस्था(ज्ञानदेवे रचीला पाया) दिली तशीच ऊर्जीतावस्था संतपुरंदरदासांनी दिली. आज दक्षिणभारतात चारही राज्यात विठ्ठलभक्ती खुप खोलवर रुजली आहे त्याचे श्रेय संत पुरंदरदासांकडे जाते. ही दास परंपरा आज अखेर प्रभावीपणे कार्यरत आहे. पुर्वी रस्त्यावर फिरून विठ्ठलभजन गाणारे हे लोक अजूनही विठ्ठलाची गाणि मंदीरातून, रस्त्यावर गात फिरत असतात. या दास परंपरेत पुरंदरदासांच्या आदेशाने त्यांचे सर्व अनुयायी आज अखेर आपल्या नावा मागे विठ्ठलाचे नाव लावतात. हंपी जवळ होस्पेट नावाचे तालूका आहे, तीथे काही कुटुंबात मी गेलो होतो. ते लोक आपल्या नावामागे विठ्ठलाचे नाव लावतात.

Today, devotion to Vitthal is deeply rooted in all the four states of South India and the credit goes to Saint Purandardas. This slave tradition is finally working effectively today. These people, who used to walk on the streets and sing Vitthal Bhajan, are still singing Vitthal's songs from temples and streets. In this slave tradition, by the order of Purandardas, all his followers finally put the name of Vitthal after their name. There is a taluka called Hospet near Hampi, where I went with some family. They name Vitthal after their name.
