स्कंद पुराणानुसार मोढेरा जवळील भागाला रामायण काळी 'धर्मारण्य' असे संबोधले जायचे. रावणाचा वध करून परतलेल्या श्रीरामाने गुरु वसिष्ठाना ब्रह्म हत्येच्या पातकापासून मुक्त होण्यासाठी काय करावे असे विचारले. गुरु वसिष्ठांनी धर्मारण्यात जाऊन यज्ञ करण्याचा सल्ला दिला. मोढेरा येथील जन धारणेनुसार प्रभू श्रीराम आणि सीता यांनी या ठिकाणाला भेट देऊन यज्ञ केला आणि 'मोढेरक' या गावाची स्थापना केली. याचा गावाला पुढे मोढेरा असे म्हटले जाऊ लागले.

गुजरात राज्यातील महेसाणा जिल्ह्यातील मोढेरा गावातील सूर्यमंदिर आहे. पुष्पावती नदीच्या काठावर असलेले हे दुर्मिळ मंदिर इसवीसन १०२६-२७ साली चालुक्य राजा भीम पहिला याने बांधले आहे.

     या सूर्य मंदिराचे स्वतःचेएक ऐतिहासिक महत्व देखील आहे. हे सूर्य मंदिर विलक्षण वास्तुकला आणि शिल्पकलेच एक उत्कृष्ट उदाहरण आहे. या मंदिराच्या बांधकामात कुठेही चुन्याचा उपयोग केलेला आढळत नाही.

🌞सभामंडपात ५२ स्तंभ आहेत. या स्तंभांवर वेगवेगळ्या देवी-देवतांचे चित्र आहेत, त्याव्यतिरिक्त रामायण आणि महाभारतातील प्रसंगांना देखील उत्कृष्ट कारीगिरी करून दर्शविण्यात आले आहे.या स्तंभांना खालच्या दिशने बघितल्यास ते अष्टकोनी दिसतात तर वरच्या बाजूने बघितल्यास ते गोलाकार दिसतात. या मंदिराला या पद्धतीने बनविण्यात आले होते की, सूर्योदय झाल्यावर सूर्याची पहिली किरण ही गर्भगृहाला प्रकाशमान करेल.गूढ मंडपातील काही मूर्तीवर इराणी पद्धतीचा संस्कार दिसतो. गूढ मंडपात काही मिथुन शिल्पेही आढळतात. गूढ मंडपावर आज शिखर आढळत नाही. सभामंडपाच्या समोर एक विशाल कुंड आहे जे सूर्यकुंड किंवा रामकुंडया नावाने प्रसिद्ध आहे.आपण वाचत आहात माहिती सेवा ग्रूप पेठवडगावची पोस्ट, सोलंकी राजा सुर्ववंशी होते आणि ते सूर्य देवाला कुलदेवता म्हणून पुजत असत. म्हणून त्यांनी त्यांच्या आराध्य देवाच्या पूजेसाठी या भव्य सूर्य मंदिर निर्माण करण्याचा विचार केला आणि त्यातून मोढेराचे हे सूर्य मंदिर साकारण्यात आले.

पण, परकीय आक्रमणकर्त्यांच्या आक्रमणानंतर, अल्लाउद्दीन खिलजीच्या आक्रमणाने मंदिराचे मोठ्या प्रमाणावर नुकसान झाले. त्यांनी मंदिरातील मुर्त्या देखील तोडल्या, म्हणून आता या मंदिरात पूजा करणे निषिद्ध आहे. अल्लाउद्दिन खिलजीच्या आक्रमणाने या मंदिराला खंडित केले असे मानल्या जाते. सध्या हे मंदिर भारतीय पुरातत्त्व विभागाच्या संरक्षणाखाली आहे.या सूर्य मंदिराचा उल्लेख पौराणिक ग्रंथांमध्ये देखील करण्यात आला आहे. जसे स्कंद पुराण आणि ब्रह्म पुराण, ज्यात सांगितल्या गेले आहे की, प्राचीन काळात मोढेराच्या आसपासचे संपूर्ण क्षेत्र हे धर्मरण्य नावाने ओळखल्या जायचं.

या मंदिराव्यतिरिक्त भारतात दोन सूर्य मंदिरे आहेत. पहिले ओरिसामधील 'कोणार्क मंदिर', दूसरे जम्मू येथील 'मार्तंड मंदिर' व तीसरे हे गुजरात मधील मोढेरा येथील 'सूर्य मंदिर' होय.

According to the Skanda Purana, the area near Modhera was called 'Dharmaranya' during the Ramayana period. Returning after slaying Ravana, Shri Rama asked Guru Vasishtha what to do to get rid of the sin of Brahma murder. Guru Vasishtha advised to go to Dharmarana and perform Yajna. According to popular belief in Modhera, Lord Shriram and Sita visited this place and performed Yajna and established the village 'Modherak'. The village came to be known as Modhera.

The world famous Sun Temple is not worshiped

There is a Sun Temple at Modhera village in Mahesana district in the state of Gujarat. This rare temple on the banks of the river Pushpavati was built in 1026-27 AD by the Chalukya king Bhim I.

     This Sun Temple also has a historical significance of its own. This Sun Temple is a great example of fantastic architecture and sculpture. Nowhere in the construction of this temple is lime used.

There are 52 pillars in the assembly hall. These pillars have depictions of various deities, besides the events of Ramayana and Mahabharata are also depicted with excellent workmanship. These pillars look octagonal when viewed from the lower side and round when viewed from the upper side. The temple was built in such a way that the first rays of the sun at sunrise would illuminate the sanctum sanctorum. Some of the idols in the mysterious pavilion show Iranian-style rites. Some Gemini sculptures are also found in the mysterious tent. The peak is not found on the mysterious tent today. In front of the sabhamandapa there is a huge tank which is known as Suryakund or Ramkundya. So they decided to build this magnificent Sun Temple for the worship of their deity, and this Sun Temple of Modhera was built out of it.

But, after the invasion of foreign invaders, the temple was severely damaged by the invasion of Allauddin Khilji. They also broke the idols in the temple, so worship in this temple is now forbidden. It is believed that the invasion of Allauddin Khilji destroyed the temple. Currently, the temple is under the protection of the Archaeological Survey of India. The Sun Temple is also mentioned in mythological texts. Like the Skanda Purana and the Brahma Purana, which state that in ancient times the entire area around Modhera was known as Dharmaranya.

Apart from this temple, there are two Sun temples in India. The first is the Konark Temple in Orissa, the second is the Martand Temple in Jammu and the third is the Sun Temple in Modhera in Gujarat.
