जिद्द कशाला म्हणतात ती ही जीवनसंघर्षाची कहाणी वाचल्यानंतर लक्षात येईल. समाधानाचा तरंग अंतरंगापर्यंत पोचण्याआधीच सुखाचं नवं रूप नव्या ढंगात निमंत्रण देतच असतं. मग ते पूर्ण करण्यासाठी आटापिटा.

यवतमाळच्या मुख्य रस्त्यावर भाजी विकणारी एक निरक्षर विधवा महिला. ५ मुली पदरात आणि अठराविश्व दारीर्द्र्य घरात. अचानक एक दिवस इंग्लंडहून तिच्याच समाजातील एक माणूस उगवला. त्याची बायको हि नुकतीच देवाघरी गेली होती. समाजातील प्रथे प्रमाणे दुसरे लग्न करणे भाग होते. मग कोणा मध्यस्थाने दिला या दोघांचा पाट लावून.
नवीन नवरा हिला घेऊन बोटीने लंडनला गेला. बरोबर पाचातल्या दोन मुली घेतल्या. बाकीच्यांना नातेवाईकांच्या भरवशावर इथेच ठेवले.तिथे त्याच्या मुलांनी हिला ठेऊन घ्यायला नकार दिला. मग कसाबसा हा अजब संसार चालू राहिला. एक दिवस आकाश कोसळले. थोड्या आजाराचे निमित्त होऊन नवर्याचा मृत्यू झाला. नंतर काही दिवसातच घरातल्यांनी ह्या बाईच्या हातात बोटीची ३ तिकिटे आणि ५० पौंड ठेवले आणि घरा बाहेर काढले. ते हि ऐन हिवाळ्यात.
बाईच्या हाताल धरून दोन लहानग्या मुली, एक वळकटी आणि जेमतेम चार इंग्रजी शब्द .यावर हि अशिक्षित ९ वारी नेसलेली बाई लंडन च्या बर्फात सुन्न होऊन उभी होती.ऐन हिवाळ्याच्या दिवसात घराबाहेर पडलेल्या राधाबाई अनोळख्या या देशामध्ये सोबतीला कोणी आपलं माणूस नाही. बाहेर बर्फ पडत होता, हाताला दोन मुली, नववारी साडी नेसलेली बाई लंडनच्या रस्त्यावर एकटी सुन्न मनस्थितीत बसलेली होती. जीवनात पुढे काय करायचं? कसं जगायचं? मुलींना कसं जगवायचं? अशा अनेक प्रश्नांनी डोक्यात विचारांचे काहूर माजलं होतं. एका जवळ राहणार्या भल्या ज्यू माणसाने तिला घरी नेले आणि कसाबसा संवाद साधत तुला काय येते विचारले. हि म्हणाली "स्वयंपाक". त्याने हिला आपल्या घरातील मोकळी जागा दिली आणि म्हणाला मग कर स्वयंपाक. तुझ्या देशातले लोक येतील बघ खायला.आणि असा "आजीबाई वनारसे खानावळ " या लंडन मधल्या खानावळीचा जन्म झाला.
लंडन मध्ये अस्सल मराठी जेवण मिळते हे कळल्यावर त्यांच्याकडे तिथे गेलेल्या मराठी मुलांची आणि कामाला गेलेल्या एकट्या बाप्यांची रीघ लागली, पुढे या बाईंनी कॉट बेसिस वर रहायला जागा द्यायला सुरवात केली, असे होता होता आजीबाईंची खानावळ इतकी प्रसिध्द झाली कि लंडन ला जाऊन त्यांच्याकडे न गेलेला मराठी माणूस मिळायचा नाही.
लंडनमध्ये असणाऱ्या मराठी माणसांच्या जीभेचे चोचले पुरवण्याचं काम आजीबाईच्या खानावळीतून होत असे. शिक्षणासाठी आणि कामासाठी वास्तव्य करणाऱ्या लोकांची खानावळीसाठी गर्दी होते. तिथून पुढचा प्रवास म्हणून आजीबाईंची खानावळ मोठ्या जागेत विस्तारते. अगदी पु.लपासून अत्रेपर्यंत अनेक जण लंडनला गेल्यानंतर आजीबाईंच्या खानावळीत जेवायला जात असे.
बाई ९ वारी साडी नेसून लंडन च्या मेट्रोने एकट्या प्रवास करीत (शेवट पर्यंत त्या ९ वारी साडीच नेसत होत्या) स्टेशन ची नावे वाचता येत नसत म्हणून कितवे स्टेशन ते विचारून घेत आणि मोजून उतरत.बाई वारल्या तेव्हा त्यांच्या मालकीची लंडन मध्ये ५ घरे होती. लंडन मधला गणेशोत्सव त्यांनी चालू केला. तिथले पहिले देऊळहि त्यांनीच बांधले.त्यांच्या अंतयात्रेला राणीचा प्रतिनिधी म्हणून लंडन चा मेयर हजर होता. आणि सगळ्यात गम्मत म्हणजे त्या शेवटपर्यंत अशिक्षितच राहिल्या. जेमतेम RADHABAI अशी सही करीत.
अशा बनारसे आजीबाईंचं प्रेरणादायी चरित्र सरोजिनीबाई वैद्य यांनी ‘कहाणी लंडनच्या आजीबाईंची’ या नावानं काही वर्षांमागे लिहिलं. त्यातून प्रेरित झालेल्या राजीव जोशींनी ‘लंडनच्या आजीबाई’ हे नाटक लिहिलं आहे आणि ‘कलामंदिर’ या संस्थेनं ते नुकतंच रंगभूमीवर आणलं आहे
त्यांचे निधन झाले  त्यावेळी त्यांच्या अंत्ययात्रेला लंडनच्या सरकारी आणि सामाजिक क्षेत्रातील अनेक मान्यवर उपस्थित होते.

पंखातलं बळ संपवून पाखराला आयतं डाळींब मिळण्यात कुठलं आलय सुख! आभाळ पाठीवर घेऊन भरारीची दमछाक मिरवीत धुंडून जे फळ मिळतं तेच फळ! दुसऱ्यानं आपल्यासाठी ठेवलेलं ते निष्फळ! 

फक्त शिक्षण व पैसे ह्या बाबी व्यवसाय करण्यासाठी इतक्या महत्वाच्या नाहीत. सर्वात महत्त्वाचे आहेत ते चिकाटीने प्रयत्न करणे, मेहनत घेणे व काहीतरी करून दाखवण्याची जिद्द.

Sarojinibai Vaidya wrote the inspiring character of such a Banarase grandmother a few years back under the title 'Kahani London's Grandmother'. Inspired by this, Rajiv Joshi has written the play 'Grandmother of London' and it has recently been brought to the stage by 'Kalamandir'.

At the time of his death, his funeral was attended by many dignitaries from the London government and the social sector. Meaning: Education and money alone are not so important for doing business. The most important thing is perseverance, hard work and determination to do something.
