कोल्हापूरच्या मातीत जन्मून मोठा नावलौकिक मिळवणारे रांगडे नायक म्हणुन  अरूण सरनाईक यांची आोळख आहे.

४ ऑक्टोबर, १९३५ रोजी जन्मलेल्या अरूणचे,वडील महाराष्ट्र कोकिळ शंकरराव सरनाईक हे होत. बलवंत संगीत नाटक मंडळीमुळे महाराष्ट्रभरात त्यांचं नाव झालं होतं. चुलते निवृत्तीबुवा सरनाईक शास्त्रीय गायक होते. भजनसम्राट म्हणून त्यांचा नावलौकिक होता. त्यामुळे अभिनयाबरोबरच अरुण सरनाईकांना घरातूनच गायनाचा वारसा मिळाला होता. ते उत्तम तबलावादक होते. खर्जातल्या आवाजाची उपजत देणगी त्यांना मिळाली होती.
कोल्हापूर तेव्हा ऍन बहरात होते.येथे चित्रपट निर्मिती होत होती.यावेळी कोल्हापुरात नट मंडळी भरपुर होती. चित्रपट वातावरण छान होते.बरेच निर्माते,दिग्दर्शक,तंत्रज्ञ कोल्हापूरात राहत होते. चित्रपटाबरोबरच नाटक,मेळे कोल्हापूरात निर्माण होत होते.उठसुठ मुंबई,पुण्याला जायची गरज भासत नव्हती.
अरूण सरनाईकाना नाटकात काम करण्याची आवड होती.वडिलांच्या आोळखीने त्यांना लहान लहान भुमिका मिळु लागल्या.१९६० च्या दरम्यान गोविंदराव टेंबे यांच्या "जयदेव" नाटकात अरूण सरनाईकांना गायक नट म्हणून पहिल्यांदा संधी मिळाली. नंतर मो. ग. रांगणेकर यांच्या 'भटाला दिली ओसरी' हे त्यांचं पहिलं लोकप्रिय नाटक होते.रुबाबदार व्यक्तिमत्वामुळे सरनाईकांसाठी अनंत माने यांच्यामुळे दरवाजे खुले झाले.
त्यांनी दिग्दर्शित केलेल्या "शाहीर परशुराम" हा सरनाईक यांचा पहिला चित्रपट होता.यात त्यांनी परशुरामाच्या मुलाची भूमिका केली.  व मराठी चित्रपटाला रांगडा अभिनेता मिळाला.त्या काळात सुर्यकांत,चंन्द्रकांत हे अभिनेते सोडले तर दुसरे नायक म्हणून कोणी निर्माते विचार देखील करत नव्हते.अशा काळात अनंत मानेनी दिलेल्या संधिचे अरूण सरनाईकानी सोने केले.अनंत मानेंच्या सुमारे १५ सिनेमांमधे त्यांनी भूमिका केल्या. केला इशारा जाता जाता, अशीच एक रात्र होती, सवाल माझा ऐका, सांगू कशी मी, गळगौळण, डोंगरची मैना, पाहुणी, एक गाव बारा भानगडी, पाच रंगाची पाच पाखरं, तोतया आमदार ही त्यातल्या काही सिनेमांची नावं. २५ वर्षांच्या कालावधीत त्यांनी सुमारे पाऊणशे सिनेमे आणि २५ नाटकांमधे भूमिका केल्या.डॉ. जब्बार पटेल दिग्दर्शित "सिंहासन" मधील मुख्यमंत्री आजही लोकप्रिय आहे. ते उत्तम गायक होते."घरकुल' या चित्रपटासाठी सी. रामचंद्र यांनी त्यांच्याकडून "पप्पा सांगा कुणाचे' हे अजरामर गीत गाऊन घेतले.
जयश्री गडकर आणि अरुण सरनाईक हे कधीकाळी मराठी निर्माते, दिग्दर्शकांसाठी चलनी नाणं होतं. व्यावसायिक रंगभूमीवर नानावटी खटल्यावर आधारित "अपराध मीच केला" हे मधुसूदन कालेलकर यांनी लिहिलेलं नाटक खूप गाजलं. त्यात सरनाईक यांची प्रमुख भूमिका होती.
ते नायक म्हणुन बहरात असताना वयाच्या अवघ्या ४९ वर्षी त्यांचा अपघाती मृत्यू झाला.कोल्हापूरहून पुण्याला जात असताना पुणे- बंगळूर महामार्गावर किणीजवळ कार अपघातात ते, त्यांची पत्नी अनिता,  व नुकताच इंजिनियर झालेला मुलगा संजय ठार झाले. तेव्हा त्यांची मुलगी मिरज मेडिकल कॉलेजमधे शिकत होती. तारीख होती २१ जून १९८४.
नसिरुद्दीन शाह आणि स्मिता पाटील यांच्याबरोबर सितम सिनेमात त्यांना भूमिका मिळाली होती. आणखी दोन हिंदी सिनेमांचं चित्रिकरण सुरू होणार होतं. हिंदीतल्या तीन सिनेमांच्या ऑफर्स त्यांना आलेल्या होत्या. मात्र त्यांच्या मृत्यूनं पुढचा सगळा अभिनयाचा प्रवासच थांबवला.

Born on October 4, 1935, Arun's father was Maharashtra Kokil Shankarrao Saranaik. He became famous all over Maharashtra due to his strong musical theater troupe. Cousin Nivruttibuwa Sarnaik was a classical singer. He had a reputation as a psalmist. Therefore, along with acting, Arun Saranaik had inherited singing from home. He was a great tabla player. He had received the gift of sound.

Kolhapur was in Ann Bahra at that time. Films were being made here. At that time, there were a lot of actors in Kolhapur. The film atmosphere was great. Many producers, directors, technicians were living in Kolhapur. Along with films, plays and fairs were being organized in Kolhapur. There was no need to go to Mumbai or Pune.

Arun Saranaika was interested in acting in plays. He got small roles in his father's acquaintance. Then mo. C. Ranganekar's 'Bhatala Dili Osari' was his first popular play.

"Shahir Parashuram" was his first film directed by him. In it, he played the role of Parashuram's son. And Marathi film got a yawning actor. At that time, if Suryakant and Chandrakant were left out, no producer would have thought of another hero. It was a night like this, listen to my question, tell me how I am, Galgaulan, Dongarchi Maina, Pahuni, Ek Gaav Bara Bhangadi, Five Birds of Five Colors, Totaya MLA are some of the names of these movies. Over a period of 25 years, he acted in about 500 movies and 25 plays. The CM in "Throne" directed by Jabbar Patel is still popular today. He was a great singer. For the film 'Gharkul', C. Ramchandra sang the song 'Pappa Sanga Kunache' from him.

Jayashree Gadkar and Arun Saranaik were once the currency for Marathi producers and directors. Madhusudan Kalelkar's play "Apradh Meech Kela" based on Nanavati case was very popular in the commercial arena. Sarnaik had a major role in it.

He died in a car accident on his way to Pune from Kolhapur. He, his wife Anita and son Sanjay, who had just become an engineer, were killed in a car accident near Kini. At that time, his daughter was studying in Miraj Medical College. The date was June 21, 1984.

He had a role in Sitam with Nasiruddin Shah and Smita Patil. Filming of two more Hindi movies was about to start. He had received offers for three Hindi movies. However, his death stopped the next journey of acting.
