काशी येथील झुकलेले "रत्नेश्वर मंदिर"

आपणास इटली येथील पिसा शहरातील झुकलेला "पिसाचा मनोरा" माहिती असेलच.लोकप्रिय आकर्षण असलेला हा मनोरा गेले अनेक शतके एका बाजूला झुकलेल्या अवस्थेत आहे.कमकुवत पाया, पायाखालील ठिसूळ जमीन इत्यादी कारणांमुळे ११७८ साली तीन मजले बांधून पूर्ण झाल्यानंतर हा मनोरा एका बाजूला कलण्यास सुरुवात झाली.या मनोर्‍याशेजारचे सांता मारिया कॅथ्रेडल आणि बाप्टिस्ट्री यांच्या वास्तूसुद्धा अर्धा ते एक अंशातून कलल्या आहेत. एवढेच नाही तर शहरातील काही खासगी प्रासाद, सेंट मायकेल चर्च आणि सेंट निकोलाय चर्च यांचे बेल टॉवरसुद्धा एक ते दीड अंशातून झुकले आहेत. हा सर्व चमत्कार तिथल्या मूळच्या दलदलीच्या जमिनीमुळे झाला आहे.
अगदी असाच प्रकार आपल्या भारतात काशी (वाराणसी) येथे पाहावयास मिळतो.येथे गंगा नदीवर मणिकर्णिका घाट आहे. तेथे रत्नेश्वर महादेव मंदिर हे अशाच प्रकारे झुकलेले आहे.पण आपणास याची माहिती नसते किंवा माहिती असली तरी आपण इटली येथील मनोराचे गुणगान गात असतो.हे मंदिर पाचशे वर्षांपूर्वी अहिल्याबाई होळकर यांनी आपली दासी “रत्नाबाई" हिच्या ईच्छेवरून बांधले म्हणून या मंदिराचे नामकरण "रत्नेश्वर महादेव मंदिर" पडले असे सांगितले जाते.या मंदिराला प्रदक्षिणा मार्ग नाही. तर मंदिराच्या गर्भागृहात छोटे छोटे शिखर तयार केलेले आहेत. मंदिराचा घुमट गुजरातच्या वास्तूकलेचे दर्शन घडविणारा आहे. त्यामुळे मंदिर तयार करणारे कारागिर गुजरातहून आले असण्याची शक्यता आहे.रत्नेश्वर महादेव मंदिराला पाहून कोणालाही असे वाटते की, भुंकप किंवा एखाद्या नैसर्गिक आपत्‍तीमुळे हे मंदिर काहीसे झुकले असावे. तर काही जण असे म्हणतात की,शापामुळे या मंदिराची अशी अवस्था झाली आहे.
वाराणसी येथील हिंदू विद्यापीठात कला व इतिहास विभागाचे प्रो. अतुल त्रिपाठी सांगतात की, १८३४ मध्ये ब्रिटनचे प्रसिद्ध चित्रकार विल्यम्स डेनियल यांनी वाराणसी यात्रेदरम्यान रत्नेश्वर महादेव मंदिराचे चित्र काढले होते. त्यात मंदिराचा कळस झुकलेला दाखविण्यात आला आहे. तसेच रॉबर्ट एलियट यांनी १८२४ मध्ये काढलेल्या चित्रात दोन मंदिरांचे कळस झुकलेले दाखविण्यात आले आहे.पाच वर्षापूर्वी रत्नेश्वर महादेव मंदिरावर वीज पडली. त्यामुळे मंदिराचा काही भाग तुटून नुकसान झाले आहे.

युनेस्कोच्या जागतिक वारसा यादीत इटली येथील विश्वविख्यात पिसा येथील मिनाराचा उल्लेख आहे. कारण हे मिनार चार अंशांनी झुकलेले आहे. पण काशीचे रत्नेश्वर मंदिर त्याहीपेक्षा पाच अंशांनी जास्त म्हणजे नऊ अंशांनी झुकलेले आहे. गंगेच्या प्रवाहाच्या विरुद्ध मणिकर्णिका घाटाच्या दिशेने आपल्या अक्षांवर नऊ अंशांनी झुकलेले आहे.पिसाच्या मनोऱ्याची उंची १८३ मीटर असून रत्नेश्वर महादेव मंदिराची उंची ४० मीटर आहे व पिसाचा मनोरा फक्त ५ डिग्रीच झुकलेला असून रत्नेश्वर महादेव मंदिर ९ 'डिग्री झुकलेले आहे. रत्नेश्वर मंदिराचे दुर्दैव इतकं कि जागतिक वारसा तर सोडाच पण अजून ऐतिहासिक वास्तू म्हणून साधी नोंद पण नाही.हे मंदिर खाजगी प्रॉपर्टी असल्याने हे असे झाले असावे.

You may be familiar with the leaning "Pisa Tower" in the city of Pisa, Italy. The popular attraction has been tilted to one side for centuries. Due to weak foundations, fragile ground under the feet, etc. The adjoining buildings of Santa Maria Cathedral and Baptiste are also tilted by half to one degree. Not only that, but some of the city's private palaces, St. Michael's Church and St. Nicholas Church's bell towers are also tilted by one to one and a half degrees. All this miracle is due to the original swampy land there.
This is exactly what we see in Kashi (Varanasi) in India. There is Manikarnika Ghat on the river Ganga. The Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple is tilted in the same way there. But whether you know it or not, you are singing the praises of a tower in Italy. It is said to have fallen. There is no way to go around this temple. There are small peaks in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. The dome of the temple is a display of Gujarat's architecture. The temple may have been tilted by an earthquake or a natural disaster, but some say it was cursed.
Prof. of Arts and History Department at Hindu University, Varanasi. Atul Tripathi says that in 1834, the famous British painter Williams Daniel painted the Ratneshwar Mahadev Temple during his visit to Varanasi. It shows the top of the temple bent. Also, a painting by Robert Elliott in 1824 shows the tops of two temples bent. Five years ago, the Ratneshwar Mahadev temple was struck by lightning. As a result, part of the temple has been damaged.

The UNESCO World Heritage List mentions the world-famous minaret in Pisa, Italy. Because this tower is tilted by four degrees. But the Ratneshwar temple in Kashi is tilted by nine degrees, five degrees higher than that. Manikarnika is inclined by nine degrees on its axis towards the ghats against the flow of the Ganges. The misfortune of the Ratneshwar temple is that it is not a world heritage but a simple historical record. It must have happened because this temple is a private property.
