भारतातील प्रसिद्ध व श्रीमंत देवस्थान म्हणजे तिरूपती येथील बालाजी मंदिर.या मंदिराला देशी व परदेशी लाखो भाविक भेट देतात.देवाचे दर्शन घेतल्यानंतर बालाजी मंदिरात डोक्यावरचे केस दान करण्याची पद्धत आहे. याचं कारण असं की तिरुपती बालाजी हे भगवान विष्णूंचे एक रूप… ते प्रसन्न झाले की लक्ष्मी आपोआप प्रसन्न होते अशी धारणा आहे. जो व्यक्तीआपल्या मनातील सर्व पाप आणि वाईट सवयी येथे सोडून देतो. म्हणून त्याचे सर्व दुःख देवी लक्ष्मी नष्ट करते. केसांच्या रूपाने लोक आपापली पापे येथे सोडून देतात असा समज आहे

  अर्पण केलेल्या केसांचा खच मंदिरात पडलेला असतो. 
मंदिर प्रशासन ह्या सर्व केसांचं काय करतं हा प्रश्न अनेकांना पडलेला असतो.तिरुमलामध्ये पूर्वी केशदानातून मिळालेल्या केसांची लिलावातून विक्री होत असे. दान केलेल्या केसांना तिरुपतीच्या भांडार केंद्रात आणले जातात. मग या केसांचा रंग आणि लांबीनुसार लिलाव केला जातो. त्यांची पाच प्रकारात विभागणी होते. लांब केसांचे जास्त पैसे मिळतात. यातुन देवस्थानाला लाखो रूपये मिळतात.बरं या विकत घेतलेल्या केसांचं पुढे काय होतं? उत्तर आहे  याचे कृत्रिम केस बनवले जातात. विदेशात सुट्ट्या केसांना प्रचंड प्रमाणात मागणी आहे. अंतरराष्ट्रीय बाजारात भारतीय केसांना अधिक दर मिळतो, भारतीय केसांना ‘व्हिर्जिन हेअर’ (स्पर्श न झालेले केस) संबोधण्यात येते. यामागेदेखील महत्वाचे कारण आहे. अनेक भारतीय केसांना रंगविण्यापासून अथवा डाय करण्यापासून दूर राहाणे पसंत करतात. मंदिरात केस चढविणारे अनेक मध्यमवर्गिय आणि गरिब भाविक हेअर स्टाईलदेखील करत नसल्याने त्यांचे केस हे नैसर्गिक अवस्थेत असतात. याव्यतिरिक्त लहानपणापासून वाढविण्यात आलेल्या केसांमध्ये केराटीनची मात्रा अधिक असते. केसांमधील या पोषक पदार्थामुळे केसांचे स्वास्थ चांगले राहाते. याकारणासाठी या केसांना ‘व्हर्जिन हेअर’ असे म्हटले जाते.Wigs बनवण्यासाठी आणि सेलिब्रिटी फॅडच्या Hair Extensions साठी या केसांचा वापर केला जातो.
